MiPlaza and Holst Centre put open innovation into practice MiPlaza and the Holst Centre, both located on the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, have signed a framework agreement concerning the provision of MiPlaza research services to the Holst Centre and the sharing of joint expertise. The five-year agreement provides a solid framework enabling the Holst Centre to make use of the whole range of MiPlaza services in their research programs
The agreement operates fully in the spirit of Open Innovation, the principle that fundamental technological breakthroughs and generic innovations can best be achieved through close cooperation between companies, research centres and universities.

MiPlaza (Microsystems Plaza) offers a world-class infrastructure and expertise enabling customers and partners to carry out high-tech research and development programs in the most cost-effective way. Such programs are typically in the areas of electronic systems, large area electronics, healthcare, and nano-technology. The facilities offered include multi-purpose cleanrooms for thin film processing and systems-in-package, materials analysis, product design, prototyping, test and measurement. MiPlaza is part of Philips Research, and is one of the largest shared research service centres in the world.

The Holst Centre operates as an independent research centre created jointly between the Belgian R&D institute IMEC and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO. The Holst Centre research programs involve participating companies, research institutes and universities and are focused on developing new generic technologies, developed up to demonstrator performance level. This gives industry a ready platform for fast product development and commercialization of associated new products. The research programs focus on two main areas. Wireless autonomous transducer solutions will enable objects to interact wirelessly with their environment, people and each other, further realizing the concept of ambient intelligence. System-in-foil products, incorporating electronics printed on thin substrates such as foil, will create a revolution in ultra light, flexible electronic products such as lighting, signage, sensors and displays.

The five-year agreement provides a solid framework enabling the Holst Centre to make use of the whole range of MiPlaza services in their research programs. Furthermore, the agreement looks towards expansion beyond the current level of services and expertise. It allows for knowledge transfer, as well as optimal investment and utilization strategies for additional new facilities in the future.

“MiPlaza’s facilities and expertise and the Holst Centre’s research programs are very well matched, and we’re pleased to be working together. Not only is the Holst Centre becoming one of our largest and fastest growing customers. Serving top research centres such as the Holst Centre also keeps MiPlaza at the technological leading edge” said André Gehring, Head of MiPlaza.

The agreement gives further economic impetus to the region, already one of the most technologically innovative in Europe.
